The idea is to use networked communication to send data across several hundreds of space lighting installation to display a single message in a short amount of time via long distance, without any internet connection or power source. After exploring wifi, bluetooth, and zigbee networks, we come across APRS and the possibility to use it with Arduino to control lights. The wikipedia page on AVRS has great intro about the system. After looking into Yaesu and D-link radio products, I found this company,Argent, particularly interesting due to their research and products on AVRS devices and the community wiki. There is a wiki page for the Radio shield for AVRS for Arduino on Argent wiki.

I’ve also ordered a soldering station and some different LEDs range 8000 mcd – 500000 mcd.

March 26 It has been a few try and error and we’re moving to using Xbees and developing our own light modules. We have had reached out to several different Electrical Engineering lab / hacker / Balloon company / ITP students / radio company in February and March. We had a bunch of problem to solve with limited interface option. I think we’re moving to a good direction and what we will be doing in the next couple weeks is to picked the simplest combination of the options.

This is the first prototype video:

#Kontraptionist

we made a 400 degree rotary articulator to hold Kinect for doing a full body scan.

Molmol’s logic as today, 23rd April:
The next step is to input serial data of kinect’s angular positions to openFrameworks and export a set of PLY files at a rate of 400 per revolution, or one file every 0.9 degree.

** The result from openFramworks comes out great:

Personal Statement

This piece is a response to the development of Taiwanese cultural identity and the independence movement of the past few decades. The third generation of people who have grown up in modern Taiwan have started to identify themselves as Taiwanese, a distinct identity from Chinese in China. This distinction is derived from the significant political and cultural differences that have developed since the Chinese Civil War of the 1940’s, and the founding of modern Taiwan. First, the government of Taiwan has developed into a democracy and its economy has been based on capitalism, while China continues to have an authoritarian government and has only recently converted from a socialist economy to capitalism. Secondly, the physical segregation between Taiwan and China and limits on movement between the two countries have contributed to a divergence of the cultures. Finally, the constant tension between the China and Taiwan, and a sense of oppression under the One China policy, which limits Taiwan’s engagement in international affairs, has alienated the Taiwanese from China and encouraged Taiwan to seek its own identity in arts, culture and the public sphere.

Born and raised in Taiwan in a democratic government body and a politically active family, I can hardly relate the culture in which I grew up with the modern Chinese culture. Instead, the relationship was marked by constant threats from China and its Anti-Secession law in 2005 to invade Taiwan with its military advantage. This gave the project its background of an imaginary scenario of China’s military attack on Taiwan at 2012, putting the people of Taiwan under Chinese Communist control, presumably severe and repressive, based on China’s recent history and its human rights violation records with its own dissidents and Tibetan activists. For example, the military occupation of China will forbid any kind of public speech that’s against the One China policy; arrest artists, college professors and students; perform serious border control and continue their relationship with Google and Yahoo for internet censorship.

Description

This project features a wandering temple to serve the Taiwanese people living under the occupation of the government of the People’s Republic of China, unable to make it out of the island. This new temple exists outside of the island of Taiwan, recreating the experience of spirituality for the people, rather than Gods. It’s on a mission to free Taiwan. It’s designed with a life-like character, moving and walking like a crippled pilgrim, or a wandering activist that travel for the will of the people’s future.

Background

The project background is the year 2012, when China invades Taiwan to finally achieve its longstanding goal of “One China.” The United States, which had been guaranteeing Taiwanese security until that point, backs off when China threatens to unload U.S. Treasury bonds on the financial markets, which would destroy the fragile recovery taking place in the U.S. economy from its financial crisis which began in 2008. After China gains control of the island, it imposes severe border controls, preventing the Taiwanese from leaving, along with censorship on individual speech against the Chinese government and its One China policy, plus electronic censorship of communications to and from Taiwan, all in violation of international human rights standards.

The goal of this project is to create conversations about the relationship between the United States, Taiwan and China, and raise awareness in the U.S. and international community about the situation right now facing the Taiwanese people.

User scenario

This temple is placed outside of Taiwan for several reasons: First, it’s meant to be an open communication channel for Taiwanese people and the outside world to exchange conversations on the particular issues about China-Taiwan relations. It is also a social activist art project supporting the Taiwanese people’s demands for freedom from the Chinese occupation, and protesting of the misuse of war and military domination in Taiwan’s future. Finally, it is borrowing its form from the local, traditional culture and religion to create a new experience of a godless temple for people who are living – it serves the people, instead of the dead gods and idols.

This project has an imagined audience, within its constructed scenario, of people who are concerned about the Taiwanese people and the Chinese occupation, and its design reflects that apparent audience. However, as an art project existing today, its audience includes people who may not know much about the cultural and political history and tensions between Taiwan and China, the role of the United States in this relationship, and the magnitude and potential outcome of the threat to Taiwan’s security.

The goal of this project is to create conversations about these issues amongst Taiwanese and Taiwanese expatriate communities, raise awareness in the U.S. and international community, and bring more attention to the situation right now concerning Taiwanese people to the public. The project aims to help the Taiwanese as a minority group with its visibility to the world, communicate its issues with the outside world. It should also serve as a bridge for the spirit of the minority and the oppressed to the public.

In the future, it should move outside of museum and gallery spaces, and take to the streets in the cities as public art. Reflecting what’s happening around the world about human rights violation events, Tibet independence movement, the detention of Aung san suu Kyi, the genocide in Darfur, to name only a few.

Implementation

This creature-like temple has both the features of a robot with life-like behavior and an architectural structure that represents and resembles Taiwanese local culture. It’s small and mobile, which makes it easier to move and place around the world. There are sensory devices attached to the temple that react to the visitors and control the robotic behavior. It wiggles its way forward when there’s no one in front of it, but when it senses a visitor’s presence, it stops and gives the visitor some time to examine it and interact with it.

The new temple also serves as the bridge between the people from across the internet and the world, by recreating the social networking function of a temple in Taiwanese culture. Visitors to the wandering temple awaken the eye of the temple, triggering the temple’s camera to transmit live images of the temple’s visitors and locale to the project website, which is designed as an online campaign to rally Taiwanese and international supporters for freeing Taiwan from China’s grip.

The website includes a fictional chronology of events leading up to the invasion, a series of current “news” about the campaign to free Taiwan, and ways to help the Taiwanese. The written history will blur into the real history up to the present, and include links to resources about the tensions between China and Taiwan. The temple is the connection between the physical and virtual public spaces for occupied Taiwan, Taiwanese refugees and the international community.

Design

Thoughts on the aesthetic and philosophy behind the Wandering Temple

I considered a million ways to build the wandering temple. In my mind, I want to see such creature that moves autonomously to feel and smell as ancient and magical as a faun. It should have some significant features of Taiwanese temple decorations on the roof and around it. And in its vivid colorful expression, it’s mixed in with Buddism, Taoism and a lot more local voodoo-ism flavors. All of them are reflections of a culture and its religious activities that’s so alive.

I also want to put the religious rituals as a symbol in the design too. There are several things that happens in a local Taiwanese Temple. First there are Goddess and Gods, the religious people. There are millions of candles placed in a round candles holder as a wishing wheel. There is incense burning. There are tools to find out about Gods answer to your prayer. And there are poems of chance hanging on the wall or put inside drawers of a cabinet.

The philosophy of the design is really to build a character. It has a religious giving nature, and can reveal its own cultural origin.
